Greedy or Afraid?

What makes you press so hard, insisting there’s no such thing as ‘down’ time, that you’re never ‘closed for business’?

And whatever rules you make for yourself, what makes you drive your colleagues like you do, never a thought that it might be more decent, humane – sustainable, even – to respect their time and the fact there’s more to their lives than working for you? If you’ve fallen into being on duty 24/7, that’s your own loss, but imposing that on junior colleagues is not forgivable.

Open your eyes to what you’re doing to your junior staff.

‘Working from home’, aka ‘living at work’, is bad enough. Diligent people are working even harder than before and their days have become elastic, they’re never ‘not in yet’ and they’ve never ‘left for the evening’.

If you’re anyone’s boss, you can help. You can clearly signal you don’t expect routine work outside whatever might count as a normal working day; and you can wait until a decent hour before you press ‘send’ on that email you happen to draft at 3am.

Maybe you drive your people so hard because you want to squeeze those resources to maximise profit, or perhaps you’re scared you’ll lose business if you let the pace drop. But it doesn’t really matter why you do it. The fact is that time’s running out for you to respect the lives of your colleagues and to re-invent the ‘working day’.
